A new veterans memorial is in the works in Greene County. A committee of veterans, Greene County veterans service officer Billie Johnson-Daves and former veterans service officer Mike Bierl, has organized to plan, design, fundraise and ultimately create a “worthy” memorial honoring past, present and future Greene County veterans.
Seven proposed sites in the county have been identified and the pros and cons of each will be evaluated. Currently, Greene County has veterans memorials at the Freedom Rock area on E. Lincoln Way and the south entrance to the courthouse, also on E. Lincoln Way, and on Hwy 4 and Highland Township Cemetery in Churdan.
The committee first met Nov. 3 and has planned another meeting Tuesday, Jan. 6, at 2 pm in the board room in the courthouse. The committee is in the early stages of setting up a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and obtaining a post office box for accepting donations. Veterans and the public will be invited to meetings to vote on the final location and obtain a variety of inputs and recommendations for the project.
More information will be shared as it is available.
(This project is separate from the proposed Rippey Boys memorial to commemorate the students from Old Rippey who fought in the Civil War.)
